Remembering martyrs hero Major Durga Malla (Gorkha Marty'rs Day) celeberated by Gorkhas of Dimapur (Gorkhas are known for their valour and courage, always ready to face death. Nothing can deter them from their set goal)

On this day in 1944, Durga Malla was hanged to death by the British at Red Fort Delhi.  Durga Malla was the first Gorkhas to sacrifice his life for the nation.

 Born on July 1, 1913 in Dehradun, Major Durga Malla was clever and brilliant from his childhood, and was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters. He joined 2/1 Gorkha Rifles at the age of 18 .

When Indian National Army (INA) was formed under the leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose, Durga Malla left the British Army and joined the INA, the release stated. After the formation of Indian National Army, the 3rd Gorkha Rifles 21/2,2/2 and 2/9 . played a prominent role under the commandant of Puran Singh Thakuri. The responsibility of formation of volunteers for INA was entrust to Hav. Durga Malla and Hav. Asam Singh after which Subash Chandra Bose became undisputed leaders.


It also said, he was captured by the British at Ukhrul in Manipur on March 27, 1944 and hanged on August 25, 1944 . His devotion of duty and volour coupled with other skills elevated him to rank of major in INA, he was asked to work in intelligence wing of INA. When he was collecting information of enemy camps he was caught in Ukhrul , on 27 March'1944. he was given a death sentenced by the court of trail at Red Fort, New Delhi, before death sentenced he was finally given chance to meet his wife Smt. Sharda Malla of Shyam Nagar Dhar-msala, Himachal Pardesh, Malla didn't succumb and said a word to his wife:' The sacrifice I am offering shall not go in vain, India will be free I am confident, this is only a matter of time, sharda don't worry crores of Indians are with you", the incident occur only after a three years of marriage, he was given hanged on 25th Aug 1944.


His statue was installed within the premises of Parliament which was unveiled by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in September 17, 2004 . The event of Balidan Diwas which is celebrate across country on 25th August and it is marked another recognition of 10 millions plus Nepali across India, which is a second biggest honors for the community since August 1992, when Indian parliament recognized the Nepalese language as one of the national language, and the second was the Indian parliament unveiled a statue of Maj. Durga malla In Loksabha on Dec17 2004.

Blood Donation Drive of DGU

On this day we the Gorkhas of Nagaland also commemorates this Day as Balidan Diwas' and Dimapur Gorkha Union apex Gorkha body of Dimapur Nagaland District organized Blood Donation drive on account of Gorkha Marty'rs Day every year on 25th August. Starting from the year 2011 till today DGU is organizing Blood donation camp successfully and almost more than 1000 Gorkhas of Dimapur has donated blood which is already a record of blood donation campaign report in Dimapur Nagaland. 

Balidan Diwas which literally means 'Sacrifice Day' it is also celebrated  all over India by the Gorkha community in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice made by Gorkha freedom fighter Major Durga Malla.


Countless Gorkhas have fought and made sacrifices for our beloved nation. From the freedom struggle to the heights of Kargil, Gorkhas have always been at the forefront in the defence of our country. Shaheed Durga Malla belongs to the front rank of Gorkha heroes martyred for the cause of our country’s freedom. He epitomized the fighting spirit and ardent patriotism of Indian Gorkhas.

Durga Malla’s Physical body is no more but he sacrificed himself after leading a meaningful life of only 31 years and became immortal.
